| Jason Creed, împreună cu alţi câţiva colegi amatori, realizează un film horror în pădurile din Pennsylvania, când află vestea că morţii s-au reîntors la viaţă. Conduşi de Debra, prietena lui Jason, tinerii încearcă să ajungă în unicul loc pe care-l consideră sigur: casele lor. Dar criza în care ajung oamenii este fără scăpare, niciunul din lucrurile pe care se bazau nu îi mai poate salva, iar morţii vii sunt pretutindeni. Prietenii îi mor, atacurile sălbatice ale cadavrelor se succed unul după altul, iar Jason continuă să filmeze totul, ager, obsesiv, încercând să cuprindă fiecare aspect al dramei. Comunicarea cu restul lumii devine imposibilă, autorităţile sunt depăşite de situaţie, iar o mână de supravieţuitori ajung să se ascundă într-un ultim refugiu, un adăpost care se transformă într-o capcană din care nu mai există scăpare...
